PFT NOT AMUSED

Due to the overwhelming smell of faeces emanating from fitness industry PFT have decided to post another article of hate and education.

Function: - For some strange reason everyone is going on about function in fitness yet they do not know what they are talking about.  They believe that moving wimpy weights in some strange movement that even a ballet dancer would find embarrassing will enhance their function more than racking up the weight on a squat for example.  First of all why would you get people doing the most complicated movements when they have trouble even doing a bodyweight squat?! Functional training is defined as the carry-over of ability to perform everyday tasks more efficiently using strength, speed, flexibility and intra and inter-muscular co-ordination, proprioception and other neuromuscular abilities.  Yet why do we see trainers have clients, for example, standing on one leg on a wobble board doing Russian twists?  This will probably not enhance anything apart from your ability to balance on the deck of a boat (PFT recommend this exercise to fishermen!).  Furthermore, if you change the movement pattern by destabilising the surface or resistance, you can ultimately alter the motor recruitment patterns of the body.  Word of advice: stick to what you know, if you don’t know what function is then don’t throw it around like you’re an expert.

So-called sports specific personal trainers: - Sports specific training does not mean just weighting movements required in the sport dummies. If you do not know how to do sport training then don’t bother saying you do, because you are just showing us at PFT just how pathetic you really are.  Any trainer or person who has knowledge in strength and conditioning will see you stick out like a sore thumb, so don’t try and kid us on, people.  Maybe the average Joe might not notice your smell of faeces, but we at PFT will.   In future if you do want to say you do sports specific training make sure you know what you’re talking about and actually put some research into advanced periodisation like conjugate methods, Russian methods, GPP (General Physical Preparedness) and SPP (Specific Physical Preparedness) training, training for peaks and super compensation etc.

Plagiarism (cheating): - This is to all the personal trainers who have a website and post articles.  Word of advice, make sure it is yours! At PFT WE have an opinion and we will only post articles that we have researched and written by ourselves and not copy and pasted!  Do not try to pretend to be an expert in the field when clearly you just copied it out of a book, if you use a book, make sure you quote it and form your own opinion.  That is a sign of a true trainer.  Next time you choose a trainer by looking at their ad online make sure it sounds like they actually wrote it themselves.

Athletes or ex-sports professionals thinking they are the best: - To all the trainers that like to say they are ex-footballers, professional athletes, bodybuilding champions etc. and think they are the best in the field. In PFT’s eyes you were an ex-athlete and not an amazing trainer.  Being a great athlete doesn’t mean you’re a great coach. Try telling Alex Ferguson that when he was younger he wasn’t as good a player as Cristiano Ronaldo, so therefore he isn’t as good a coach as him and he should give the manager post to him.  The next time you see a personal trainer saying he was ex this and ex that, that is exactly what he is, an X.

Bulking up: - FAT DOES NOT TURN TO MUSCLE, PEOPLE!  How many times have we heard someone say “I am trying to get bigger I’m gonna eat more, pack on extra weight and then cut up” First of all fat is fat and muscle is muscle! TWO DIFFERENT THINGS! ONE CANNOT TURN INTO ANOTHER! IS THAT CLEAR ENOUGH?!  When bodybuilders are bulking they are doing very high volume training to pack on extra muscle size and they are eating extra nutrients to fuel and recover from their workouts.  That is what is meant by bulking up, not getting fat!  Any serious bodybuilder will never go anywhere near 15% body-fat when bulking and the majority of you are probably nowhere near that (and that means the other side of the number).

The supplement crowd: - How many people actually know why they are taking supplements?  Did you use it because the cover of the latest magazine has someone massive because they used the latest products?  Did you use it because your gym’s local big-man told you so?  Did you use it because your friend is?  Word of advice, if you’re not sure why you’re supplementing and you don’t know the science behind it, don’t.  Most likely you’re using it incorrectly or you are not getting the best benefits of proper supplementation.

PFT only wants to tell it how it is in reality.  Any criticism we have will always be constructive.  Although, sometimes we write articles because we are pissed off and that is the only way to get the message across!
